The Grand Massif region is one of Frances best ski areas with exceptional skiing and a real French feel to a traditional resort in the heart of France .The resort is very popular with the residents of Franec in particular we recommend you SKI MORILLON this year .
If you are thinking of skiing for the first time with your family the resort of Morillon 1100 is fantastic. It is part of the Grand massif region and the resorts here are connected with great runs and good ski lifts. There are several resorts in this area: Sixt , Les Carroz, Flaine Samoens and Morillon 1100 plus Morillon itself which contain numerous ski apartments.
Flaine – North facing resort with a superb record of snow throughout the years , we have skied here for the last 7 years even to mid/ late April . There are 2 parts to the village Flaine Forum and Flaine Foret both are connected by lifts that run 24 hours a day and it’s very easy to ski between the two parts. It’s a gentle ski down on a green run or a blue or a red so there is a lot of choice.
Both parts of Flaine village give instant access to the slopes, there’s a free ski bus that runs continually in the forest part to transport you right on to the slopes.
There’s a great choice of ski shops in Flaine both in Flaine Forum and Flaine Foret and of course there are lots of bars and places to eat in the Flaine Forum and Flaine foret .
Morillon 1100 – This is a purpose built resort right on the slopes. The lower village of Morillon is a picturesque Savoie village centered on the main ski lift, a market is held twice a week.
The resort of Morillon 1100 is perched right on the ski slopes which are loaded with snow cannons to top up the annual snowfalls. The village is compact with a couple of restaurants and one bar which makes it very family orientated and very friendly for apres ski. There is a fantastic beginners area hidden away for you to learn to ski, once you have graduated the Marvel ski run is possible the best green run in Europe. Marvel runs from the the top of Sairon (connected directly to Morillon 1100 by 4 man chair) It’s a fabulous run down through a tree lined piste .
Whenever we go to Morillon 1100 we always start the day with a rundown Marvel to loosen the legs up! If you are first up from Morillon 1100 to the top then the run down Marvel to Morillon is exquisite without any traffic!!
Be sure to visit both Les Carroz and Samoens they both have fantastic runs and the drop down to Sixt from the Faine side is an absolute must its 14 km of pistes are very natural.
Samoens is a beautiful village, try and take the time to wander its lovely streets.
Morillon 1100 is renowned as the home of Antoine Deneraiz the former downhill winner in the Olympics. It’s an hour from Geneva by car and Geneva is connected by Easy Jet and other cheap flight options.
Overall the area ( Morillon 1100, Flaine, Sixt , Les Carroz and Samoens) have 265kms of pistes to ski with a great mix of green runs , blue runs red runs and black runs .
Morillon is part of the huge Grandmassif ski area , the skiing is measured at 265km and includes the following resorts : Les Carroz, Samoens , Flaine and Sixt.
The ski record for the Morillon Les Esserts area is fantastic ! Early snow is the norm with regular falls of snow and if not an ample supply of snow cannons to top up the pistes. The runs to the village of Morillon Les Esserts at 1100m are fantastic with a selction of blues reds and greens guiding you down from Sairon to the apartment in Jardin Alpin.
The resort of Morillon les Esserts is set at 1100 metres and is a purpose built resort , its above the picturesque village of Morillon
Morillon is a classic example of a small, charming resort linked to a big ski area. Located in the beautiful Giffre valley, the resort has a very French feel and is very popular with French visitors in summer as well as winter. A cable car links Morillon Village at valley-floor level with the Morillon Les Esserts resort.
On north-facing slopes which hold the snow well, Les Esserts is at 1100m and forms part of the vast Grand Massif ski area with 265km of piste rising to 2,561m. The resort holds the official 'Famille Plus Montagne' label for its superb children facilities. There are direct links with the resorts of Flaine, Les Carroz and Samoens. The slopes and the resort have numerous high quality good value restaurants and stunning scenery. There is a choice of ski schools (see links).
In winter, Morillon and neighbouring Samoëns’ trump card is the high number of north-facing slopes – 80% according to the tourist board. It means there is abundant, regular snow. Terrain-wise it is equally good news, with plenty of blacks balanced by some mellow intermediate terrain and lots of family-friendly blue and red runs. Indeed, the fantastic Marvel run, winding a long course through the fir trees back to Les Esserts, is rated by many as the best green run in the Alps with even black-run skiers marvelling at its fantastic scenery and roller-coaster ride. Off-piste, there is plenty of steep terrain to satisfy powder hounds and those seeking backbowls.
In the main summer season, the chairlift is open giving access to 400km of mountain bike trails and limitless alpine walking. Other summer activities in the valley and mountains include climbing, potholing, paragliding, canoeing and rafting. The recreational park of the "Lac Bleu" situated down in the valley floor at the very centre of Morillon has a multitude of activities for every age including fishing, swimming, tennis, horse riding and petanque.
Heading down the mountain, there is a cable car from Les Esserts giving direct access to Morillon village. Morillon is a charming Savoyard village built around a 16th century church. It is a conservation village and manages to retain its individual character as a small resort much loved by generations of French families. A traditional market is held in the main street each week and there is a range of small shops and restaurants. A few miles up the valley is the ancient town of Samoens. With the distinction of being a listed heritage site, Samoëns reveals its history at every turn of its streets, through its houses and sculptures. Regional heritage guides organise guided visits for those interested in history. The town also boasts an impressive botanic garden as well as a good choice of bars and restaurants.
Another few miles up at the head of the valley, Sixt is the gateway to stunning and dramatic scenery with Gorge des Tines canyon and the famous Cirque du Fer à Cheval (the horse-shoe) and Rouget waterfalls.
