The oldest Bulgarian winter resort is Borovets with a history dating back to 1896. Today Borovets is the biggest and most modern resort in Bulgaria. It is situated on the Borovets col nestled against the northern slopes of the Mousala ridge in the eastern part of Rila a heady 1390 meters above the sea level (with highest pistes at 2600m) makes it a perfect place for relaxation and recreation.
Winter in the resort is mild with plenty of snow. The average temperature during the coldest month January is 4.8ºC. Usually the slopes of Borovets have snow cover from mid December till April. There is a regular bus transport to Borovets from Samokov every 30 minutes.
Skiers benefit from the 45 kilometers of pistes which vary in difficulty and length. The pistes on Yastrebetz are the best and all of the major competitions which the resort resort has hosted have taken place there, these include various winter sports competitions and on two occasions the World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing. The biathlon track especially is considered by many to be one of the best in Europe.

There are ski runs for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers all designed with international markings and multilingual signs.
For beginners or those wanting a refresher course the Borovets ski school has is one of the best in Bulgaria and the experienced instructors (who are often ex-professional skiers) offer an excellent opportunity to learn within the resort.

Venues in Borovets have been catering for foreign tourists for many years now, the staff in the area are renowned for being friendly and professional. Most of the venues are open until the early morning and offer good prices and special 'happy hour' discounts.
The music played in the bars and clubs is mostly international dance music with special shows are throughout the season at some of the clubs.
